Web Hosting FAQ

Does Plesk 7 with the tomcat option allow a web designer to upload .jsp files to their http docs directory via ftp and have them executed as jsp files with tomcat?

Plesk uses mod_webapp Tomcat connector which can be found in opt/java/ distribution subdirectory. It should be installed in a usual way as "rpm -Uhv opt/java/*.rpm". Also Tomcat 4 should be installed. It can be found in Third_Party distribution subdirectory. It should be installed with "rpm -Uhv Third_Party/*.rpm" command.

The big advantage of mod_webapp is that is very easy to configure, has a well defined protocol named WARP, does not care about the old protocols used in Tomcat-3.x and so. Plesk does not use mod_jk.

mod_webapp allows Apache to redirect all requests for JSP pages to Tomcat, so anything like http://www.opticentre.net/index.jsp would be automatically passed through the connector.

Tomcat uses different document root than Apache, so it's wrong to simply post JSP pages to domain's httpdocs directory. Tomcat web applications should be uploaded in a web application archive (WAR) format which is a JAR similar to the package used for Java class libraries. Uploading should be performed with Control Panel -> Domains -> thedomain.com -> Tomcat.
